Into the Plastisphere, Where Only the Generalists Thrive: Early Insights in Plastisphere Microbial Community Succession

چکیده

The ubiquity of plastic debris in marine environments raises the question, what impacts do plastics have on our microbiota? To investigate this, we applied bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS2 region sequencing to identify changes microbial biofilm community compositions plastic, over time. We sampled virgin linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), nylon-6 (PA) glass after 2, 6 12 weeks constant immersion Te Whakaraupō-Lyttelton Harbour, Aotearoa-New Zealand. Of prokaryotes, Proteobacteria Bacteroidetes were predominant all samples Verrucomicrobiota most abundant mature biofilms. Microbial communities three substrate types significantly distinct from those surrounding seawater, regardless age, but not between attachment substrates. Bacterial occurring two at six found vary more among than other times; however, no significant substrate-specific identified overall. Taxa closely related previously reported plastic-biodegrading species very low abundance across substrates, including slides. Our findings suggest that microorganisms selectively persist LLDPE or PA surfaces gain direct metabolic benefit, instead using these primarily as an surface which they form generalist communities.

Life in the "plastisphere": microbial communities on plastic marine debris.

Plastics are the most abundant form of marine debris, with global production rising and documented impacts in some marine environments, but the influence of plastic on open ocean ecosystems is poorly understood, particularly for microbial communities. Plastic marine debris (PMD) collected at multiple locations in the North Atlantic was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and next-g...

Mangrove succession enriches the sediment microbial community in South China

Sediment microorganisms help create and maintain mangrove ecosystems. Although the changes in vegetation during mangrove forest succession have been well studied, the changes in the sediment microbial community during mangrove succession are poorly understood. To investigate the changes in the sediment microbial community during succession of mangroves at Zhanjiang, South China, we used phospho...

Insights into the bacterial community and its temporal succession during the fermentation of wine grapes

Grapes harbor complex microbial communities. It is well known that yeasts, typically Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and bacteria, commonly the lactic acid fermenting Oenococcus oeni, work sequentially during primary and secondary wine fermentation. In addition to these main players, several microbes, often with undesirable effects on wine quality, have been found in grapes and during wine fermentati...

Nutrient Addition Dramatically Accelerates Microbial Community Succession

The ecological mechanisms driving community succession are widely debated, particularly for microorganisms. While successional soil microbial communities are known to undergo predictable changes in structure concomitant with shifts in a variety of edaphic properties, the causal mechanisms underlying these patterns are poorly understood. Thus, to specifically isolate how nutrients--important dri...

Insights into microbial community structure from pairwise interaction networks

Microbial communities are typically incredibly diverse, with many species contributing to the overall function of the community. The structure of these communities is the result of many complex biotic and abiotic factors. In this thesis, my colleagues and I employ a bottom-up approach to investigate the role of interspecies interactions in determining the structure of multispecies communities. ...
